Middlesex University is holding a free conference for teachers and educational leaders promoting sustainability and environmental education in schools.
Top educators and experts will take part in discussions and individual workshops on Tuesday July 2nd at the MDX Hendon campus in north London as they highlight the importance of environmental education.
Topics include creating a ‘whole-school approach’ to promoting sustainability, discussing ways to empower students to get involved in projects and hands-on activities, revealing the partnerships and resources available to support schools and looking at how climate change can be integrated into the curriculum through various subjects.
Key speakers include:
- Dr Lynda Dunlop, Senior Lecturer in Science Education at the University of York, sharing approaches to developing classroom dialogue and discussion of climate choices.
- Dr Jessica Tipton, Head of National Education Nature Park at the Natural History Museum, discussing boosting diversity.
- Sarah Duffy, Common Seas Education, Head of Education, whose focus will be on plastic pollution.
- Yogita Popat, Barnet Council, Assistant Director for Sustainability.
- Dr Adam Reed, SUEZ Recycling & Recovery UK, Chief External Affairs and Sustainability Officer.
- Dr David Dixon, Author and Sustainability Consultant who will speak about whole school approaches to climate and nature emergences.
The event will feature a 75-minute panel discussion on sustainability and environmental education from a school, government and industry perspective.
Tremaine Baker, an Associate Professor in Secondary Teacher Education at MDX, said: “Recent reports by a range of organisations, including Students Organising for Sustainability UK, show there is a clear demand for the provision of high quality environmental and sustainability education in UK Schools. This presents a real challenge for schools and colleges as many staff feel they lack the knowledge, skills and training to provide effective environmental and sustainability education. Therefore, this summer conference is looking to design a programme which will support knowledge exchange of ideas and approaches to teaching sustainability and environmental education.
“Whether for sustainability leads or those keen on advancing environmental education within their schools this conference will support teacher networking and Continued Professional Development (CPD) in this crucial area of the curriculum, giving teachers and school leaders the chance to provide an effective and impactful education.”
