About your course

About your course

Across the three years, you’ll learn about the complete film-making process by making films and cover a range of production roles, post-production, scriptwriting, cinematography, and direction, informed and/or co-designed by professionals working in the film industry.

This year provides a basic grounding in the technical, narrative, and theoretical skills involved in becoming a filmmaker. It also introduces you to some of the different kinds of filmmaking, including some that they may not previously have considered.

This module encourages you to apply and combine a spectrum of production skills, creative image-making techniques, and to explore individual and experimental processes. You will be able to effectively respond to set briefs through practice-based and problem-based learning and develop creative decision-making for a range of creative outputs in various contexts. Additionally, you will be empowered to cultivate resourcefulness and enhance organisational, research, and reflection skills.

This module develops your knowledge and understanding of documentary production. It delves into the diverse forms of documentary and how different modes of address engage an audience. It also prompts critical examination of practical, ethical, and philosophical dilemmas inherent in documentary representation, particularly the responsibilities of creative practitioners in real-world scenarios. The module will emphasise the importance of narrative and its relationship to aesthetics in documentary practice, providing you with the tools to craft compelling work. The module inspires socially conscious practice, nurturing you as conscientious and passionate creators.

This module introduces you to professional working environments and technical facilities, to build a foundational base for your creative practice. Through a structured sequence of practical workshops, you will acquire a diverse range of technical skills and practices to make you into a conscientious creator. The module will empower you to explore a variety of professional production roles and techniques, whilst developing fundamental graduate competencies. By focusing on practical exercises, you will develop understanding of creative processes, enabling them to respond effectively to production challenges and work within set deadlines and guidelines. This module will prepare you for successful integration into the professional world of creative production.

This module introduces you to the principles of aesthetic and narrative analysis to promote an audio/visual literacy. This will develop understanding of the different ways in which media are created and circulated. You will become familiar with different historical, cultural, global and technological contexts in which audio/visual media develop, and some of the key critical debates which frame them. You will learn how to analyse existing media in terms of specific aesthetic techniques, and how to carry out academic research successfully. The goal of this module is to inspire you to apply these critical insights to the development of your own creative practice.

This year culminates with you working collaboratively on an 8–10-minute drama or documentary film and focusses on the skills that will enable you to do this to a high standard. It also explores wider ideas of film in context, and the discipline of working to a brief.

This module will guide you towards the proficient execution of live, client-centred, industry and community-facing briefs, emphasising the development, planning, and execution phases of a project output. It will equip you with the skills necessary to effectively work to a set brief, which will demonstrate your competency to potential employers. By engaging in client briefs and studio live productions, you can enhance your abilities to realise a client’s vision, in addition to navigating studio environments, while also diversifying your technical skills set. Additionally, the module underscores the importance of professional conduct, effective communication, and adept time management practices, to cultivate a well-rounded skill set tailored to the demands of real-world production scenarios and engagement in professional practice.

This module fosters critical enquiry into the specific philosophical issues around filmmaking practice. It will motivate you to engage with current political, social, cultural, and ideological realities through your filmmaking work, and awakens the excitement of exchanging ideas through film language. It will create an environment where questions of representation and ethical production practices can be debated and discussed. Screen media will be considered as a tool to investigate and intervene in the world, and we will empower you to consider the capacity of film to challenge received attitudes and embedded assumptions. The module therefore positions screen practice as a mode of critical thinking.

This module will teach you to apply the basic principles of narrative in both fictional and factual cinema to the creation of a short script or documentary proposal. It follows on from prior learning and skills acquisition at Level 4 and teaches how to apply these skills to the telling of a story.

This module will equip you with the ability to creatively interpret briefs and produce high-quality filmmaking. It will help you develop in exploring the aesthetic potential of moving image work through the application of production and craft skills. By collaborating on projects, you will enhance your skills through specialist roles, tackle technical challenges, and deepen your understanding of film production. The module embeds the importance of effective teamwork and professionalism, developing understanding of pre-production, production, and post-production workflows. The module enables you to situate your practice within the broader context of moving image production and equips them with the skills necessary to excel in their chosen fields.

This year focuses on your own final project, which may be a film, a screenplay or a self-directed project of another kind. It also covers the realities of working within the screen industries, and the skills that will be required of the students once they leave university.

This module will you with the critical understanding of the production cultures and working practices, and the industry organisation of the screen industries to prepare you for employment. It will also provide you with activities with a particular emphasis on the collaborative nature inherent in studio shoots. Through hands-on experience and participation in studio shoot activities, you will gain practical insights into teamwork, communication, and problem-solving within a professional production environment.

This module will provide a crucial step in your learning journey by fostering the high-level critical and practical skills necessary for navigating the diverse landscape of screen production processes. It aims to encourage creative, ambitious, and innovative approaches to creating screen media. By providing an environment that mirrors current industry processes and conditions, the module will help you gain practical insights into bringing major projects to realisation. Additionally, the module empowers you to develop and execute major projects with a clear understanding of the project’s purpose, intended audience, and contextual relevance. It also equips you with the skills and confidence to present your work effectively and professionally to others, both in its developmental stages and as a completed project, which will enhancing your readiness for professional engagement in the field.

This module facilitates high-level critical and practical skills to explore film/tv/screen media in creative, ambitious, and innovative ways. It provides an environment that reflects current industry processes and conditions to enable authentic experiences when bringing a major project to realisation. Throughout the module, you will have the opportunity to develop your own major project, honing your ability to define clear objectives, identify target audiences, and understand the broader contextual implications of their work. Additionally, this module will foster your confidence and proficiency in effectively pitching your projects to others, preparing you for successful engagement within the professional domain.

This module will excite you about the prospect of finding useful and fulfilling work in the screen industries. It also focuses on developing essential graduate skills necessary for employment. It will cultivate self-reflection, developing a personal brand and practical skills relevant to preparing students for employment or establishing a production-related business. It will also assist you in refining your skills for contributing to a major project, along with finalising your self-promoting and industry-engaging strategies, ensuring you are well-equipped to navigate the job market. Emphasising the importance of a realistic career plan post-university, the module will empower you to pursue your career goals with confidence and clarity. By providing opportunities for you to reflect on your skills and contributions, you will gain the ability to effectively communicate your value in professional settings.

What it's like to study Film at Middlesex video thumbnail

Who are you? David. What is your job title? Senior lecturer in film. One of the most exciting things about working at Middlesex is the students. They're always coming up with really innovative, challenging ideas.

I mean, it's almost an honour to guide them through the process of realising their vision. The students are able to access a wide range of equipment, really high - end camera stuff, and also great post -production facilities.

A number of editing suites, professional sound, colour grading suites. So the students have all of the equipment and the facilities to make the best work that they possibly can. Students in the course of the programme learn a lot of soft skills.

They begin pitching projects to their classmates and to their tutors as early as the first term and term one. So by the time they get to third year and they're pitching bigger projects, they're expert at and selling their ideas.

We've got an industry and collaboration strand where we have guest speakers. This year we had David Yates, you know, famous for his four Harry Potter films. They get a lot of opportunities, I think, to get a taste of what the business looks like and what it feels like when you're in it.

Every year, and we're in that process right now, we get the students in to show the rough cuts of their films. With great nervousness, they screen them to all of their peers and to all of their tutors and then they submit themselves to feedback.

And I think the students really like exercising their analytical skills, you know, in critiquing each other's work. They're really all in it together. They're all trying to help each other make the best work.

And that's a really, really, I think, really great feeling.

Each individual module will have a maximum of two assessments within it, and these will be completed by the end of the semester. Feedback may be given either in written form online, or orally in tutorials, as appropriate to the assessment.

To help you achieve the best results, we will provide regular feedback.

You are supported/encouraged to find opportunities on your own and/or supported on group briefs to deliver for industry or community partners. Career-Focused Courses | Karla’s Industry Connections.mp4

Hi, I'm Karla, and I studied film at Middlesex University. I first heard about script supervising through a master class during my second year in uni. When I was on my final year and this opportunity came my way of script supervise, a feature.

And it was an amazing opportunity. Through the entrepreneurship module, I managed to be in touch with a production company that were doing this feature called Burmansey Tales. It was a collaboration between this production company and Middlesex.

One of our lecturers suggested the idea of actually bringing students as part of the crew. Amongst them, it was me as a script supervisor. Having the chance to be able to experience this whilst having access to active feedback throughout the entire course, it was really a great opportunity.

Overall, everyone that jumps into a course like this wants to grab onto something that will secure a position in the industry afterwards or to see that there's a way to achieve what we've been working on for the past three years.

Another thing that I really loved about this university is how many people you get to meet. I'm an international student. I come from Spain. I very quickly felt very included. London is such a big, open city.

So it genuinely feels like anything you might want, you could do. I'm slowly getting a foot into the industry. It is all about networking and you just need to want to do it. And if you really want to, it will eventually happen.

What it's like studying Film at Middlesex

‘Working in the film industry, I find myself drawing on many things I learned during my time at Middlesex. This is both from a creative perspective and also when navigating my way through the industry. I joined the course as someone very inexperienced with little knowledge or portfolio. I left having produced several large projects, trying my hand in all departments and defining myself as a filmmaker. The advice from the tutors was always fantastic and still sticks with me today. Their emphasis on storytelling and creativity shows through the great work and filmmaking alumni that come from the course.’
