About your course

About your course

You'll be taught by an experienced teaching team with a wide range of expertise and professional experience. You will learn by attending seminars and practical workshops. Most seminar groups have about 25–30 students. Your work will be divided into credits of approximately 10 hours of study time. You will need to complete 120 credits per year, which are broken down into modules of typically 30 credits.

In the first year, you will learn how brands and visual storytelling shape and are shaped by culture. You’ll explore the art and science of persuasive communication for different audiences and across platforms. Additionally, you will develop creative concepts and compelling content for print and social media, by honing your skills in digital design, photography, web design, video production and sound design.

Explore the position of brands, and media in contemporary society and examine how these impact consumer behaviour. You will develop critical understanding of images, texts, and objects in various contexts, as well as issues of equality and responsible production and consumption. You will learn how to conduct effective market research, define audience and anticipate consumer decision and choices. This module equips you with critical and practical vocabularies and transferable skills for autonomous learning and research at degree level.

Learn the basics of brand development and the skills to communicate brand identity across print, digital design and photography. In this module you'll get your hands on the software and hardware that professionals use to build the content that makes up the modern media environment. You'll take a brief and learn how to critically evaluate the needs of a client and produce effective creative responses. You'll get to create your own brand and develop a strategy to promote it. By the end of the module you'll have designed a logo, shaped a brand identity, and developed branded assets for print and social media. You will have the foundational skills you need to succeed in the rest of the degree and started to develop a portfolio of work that you can show future employers.

Building on your work in the Visual Storytelling module, you will expand on your critical evaluation of the brand needs and creative image-making techniques. You will develop creative responses that encompass short form video and audio (radio/podcast) production. Through practice-based and problem-solving activities in our industry-standard facilities, you will produce audio-visual branded assets that support a coherent brand identity in a professional setting.

Learn to deliver impactful communications to different audiences, across multiple platforms achieving the required objectives. You will develop a range of digital and/or analogue practices, analytical approaches and tools by which to create, curate, direct and produce discursive content. You will also investigate the appropriate and ethical use of large language models (LLMs) as part of emerging creative practices, at the same time as developing your individual communicative style. Finally, this module enables you to explore possible career trajectories in the creative industries.

In the second year, you will deepen your expertise in analysing audience behaviours and conducting audience research, creating strong brand identities, developing effective strategic campaigns, and crafting compelling content for promotion and engagement. This year will prepare you to excel in the dynamic field of advertising, PR and promotional industries.

In a world where social media and mobile usage have become the norm, it is essential for brands and companies to observe their audience's everyday practices and engage with their shared culture. To seamlessly integrate grassroots consumer culture into their advertising, branding, and PR processes, companies and organisations need to employ traditional market and social research methods. More importantly, they need to augment these methods with new and digital-based methodologies capable of accessing and providing insights from an ever-expanding range of digital data sources.

This module equips you with the essential knowledge and skills to understand, analyse, and engage with target audiences effectively. Through workshops, case studies, and practical group learning sessions you will explore various tools, techniques, and strategies to create comprehensive customer personas, conduct audience research, and develop engagement strategies using both traditional and digital methods. You will learn how to connect these insights to advertising, PR, and branding strategies, as well as audience engagement.

Brands have become integral to all aspects of social life, from the constantly evolving ways in which people use brands as a means of constructing their identities and creating social bonds, to the political as well as commercial value they hold for companies, public institutions and even individuals.

In a context where such a diverse range of organisations and individuals are required to imagine and communicate themselves as brands, as a set of symbols, values, and emotions that convey a certain narrative vision of the world, the creation of brand identities has emerged as a key discipline that integrates a range of competencies from across the spectrum of the promotional industries.

This module provides you the tools to understand how brands build value through connecting with their audiences and to apply that understanding in the development of a set of guidelines for their own brand.

This module explores the practical process of campaign planning and how best to communicate awareness of a product, service, idea or societal issue in an effective and engaging way. The module will develop your practical campaign planning skills based on briefs set by industry organisations providing you with direct experience of working for clients. Emphasis will be placed on problem solving and over the course of the module you will undertake primary and secondary research into the audience and demographics, develop measurable and achievable goals, conceptualise and develop creative ideas and prepare a media strategy. You will then create and execute mock-ups and media assets to present a cohesive and a compelling IMC (Integrated Marketing Communications) campaign plan to an industry client.

You will be immersed in the dynamic world of digital content creation and PR, empowering you to become an effective communicator and strategic thinker in today's digital landscape. Through a combination of theoretical insights, practical exercises, and critical analysis, you will develop the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate and succeed in diverse professional contexts, while also fostering a deeper understanding of the ethical and strategic considerations inherent in contemporary PR and content creation practices.
The module will equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to implement effective PR and content creation strategies in digital platforms. It will enable you to critically analyse different forms of digital content and develop a nuanced understanding of what constitutes good content and effective content strategy. Finally, the module fosters creative thinking and problem-solving skills in designing and executing content across diverse media formats.

This module establishes an in-depth understanding of the evolving creative industries and their specialist sectors. This module offers key employment and job seeking skills, including networking, personal branding (including portfolio, CV and online profile development) and interview training. It provides you with the opportunity to learn from the experience of recent graduates who have moved into full-time roles as well as network with seasoned professionals. It will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of contemporary working practices. You will evaluate your performance and your learning from your work experience – as well as reflect on the cultural role of the organisation and place in the industry in which your work experience took place.

In the third year, you will keep updating with the new cutting-edge AI tools in digital communication and marketing industries, and their applications in the fields. You’ll advance from creating and designing brand images and identities to managing brands. Simultaneously, you will apply all the key skills gained from the programme to implement your major project, focusing on branding, re-branding, or self-branding, enriched with your entrepreneurial knowledge.
