About your course
On the MSc Legal Technology programme as a full-time student you will complete two 30-credit modules and four 15-credit modules and before progressing to a research project module.

Here is a brief overview of the modules you will study on your course.
This module delves into the intersection of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and legal analytics. Students will explore the development and application of Large Language Models, the intricacies of text analytics in legal contexts, and the deployment of AI for contract analysis and management. Ethical considerations and potential biases in AI will be considered to ensure responsible implementation of these technologies.
The aim of this module is to develop the students’ understanding of the various digital innovations that are transforming the legal industry. Students will critically evaluate a range of emerging technologies such as Robotic Process Automation (RPA), Augmented/Virtual Reality (AR), and Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the strategic implementation of these technologies within legal practice.
The module aims to enable students to critically analyze the legal and policy responses to technological developments. It will develop students’ ability to engage in interdisciplinary research to assess the scientific, political, economic, social and ethical aspects of new technologies. Students will understand that knowledge is not binary, but gradual, complex and contextual and develop the subtlety of perception necessary for lawyers dealing with evidence-based regulation.
This module aims to offer an in-depth look at how technology is reshaping legal practice and dispute resolution. Students will acquire an understanding of how technology is supporting legal practice, challenges in pursuing equitable access to justice and the need for transparency and efficiency in legal practice. The module explores the latest tools and techniques for online dispute resolution, the application of technology in courtrooms, and the digitization of judicial documentation.
This module will enable students to develop a critical understanding of relevant regulatory and ethical principles impacting on the use of digital data and technologies in legal practice. These competencies will equip students with knowledge and skills necessary to effectively safeguard sensitive information, ensure regulatory compliance when using digital data and technologies (e.g., AI, Digital Forensics), and uphold the highest standards of legal and ethical responsibility.
This module aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the critical importance of safeguarding data within the legal sector. It will enable students to critically analyze current and emerging cyber threats, implement effective procedures, and develop robust policies to manage information security. Students will acquire skills necessary to protect legal information and uphold the integrity and trustworthiness of legal operations.
This module gives students the opportunity to undertake an individual supervised project. They will apply theoretical knowledge and practical skills to conducting research and producing solutions to solve specific problems. Possible types of projects include but are not limited to research by proof of concept (design- oriented projects) and empirical research projects.

Teaching
Teaching and learning are facilitated through weekly contact sessions (workshops, lectures and seminars) and the research project. Weekly contact sessions involve activities such as small group discussions, small group and individual exercises, presentations, key concept videos, laboratory sessions using commercial and open-source software, and on-line problem-solving.
Guest events may be incorporated whereby practitioners will present their experiences and views on successes and failures aiming to provide insights and to intertwining theory and practice. In addition to tutor-led learning sessions and case studies, students are expected to undertake independent study and research work.
Students are expected to have 16-18 hours of tutor led teaching hours per week.

Coursework and assessments
Work is measures using formative and summative assessments.
Formative assessments include various methods (such as short presentations, discussions and analyses of cases studies, guided and independent technology-focused online activities) designed to support students in effectively preparing to address the summative assessment.
Formative assessments include methods such as reports, oral presentations, technology demonstrations, group projects, and practical individual projects among others.

You'll evaluate your work, skills and knowledge and identify areas for improvement. Sometimes you'll work in groups and assess each other's progress.
